Roasted Tomato Pizza Sauce. Crushed tomatoes mixed with garlic, oregano, basil, and extra virgin olive oil and roasted to perfection.

I really love this recipe for its simplicity and great flavor. This sauce is wonderful on pizza, as a dipping sauce, or even served with pasta. The tangy and flavorful roasted tomato pizza sauce is a favorite in my household and is my go to pizza sauce.

In the recipe below I take you through the steps for the perfectly roasted and thick pizza sauce. There are a few steps involved during the baking process, but the payoff is worth it. If you rather have the set-it-and-forget-it option, then you can do that too of course.

Just add the ingredients to the baking pan, mix well, cover with aluminum foil, and bake at 425 degrees for 60 minutes. No additional mixing or fuss. The sauce will be less thick and without the nice roasted top layer, but it will still be tasty.

How to Make Roasted Tomato Pizza Sauce

  • Pre-heat the oven to 425 degrees

Preparing the Roasted Tomato Pizza Sauce:

  • Combine all of the ingredients in the baking dish (do not mix).
    • See the below picture. Notice the extra virgin olive oil on the surface of the tomatoes. I did not mix these ingredients before covering and placing in the over.
    • Also notice, I listed dried basil as an ingredient, however, this picture has frozen basil. I usually use dried basil, but I had some frozen basil leftover from the summer and used that instead. Both options work well.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes at 425 degrees.
  • After the 30 minutes, mix the sauce and return the baking dish to the oven, covered.
Roasted Tomato Pizza Sauce
  • After 20 minutes uncover the baking dish, mix the sauce, then roast another 10 minutes uncovered.
    • Note: the sauce will boil and may splatter when uncovered. Plan accordingly if you do not desire splattered sauce all over the inside of your oven. I usually cover my oven grates with aluminum foil as a solution.
  • The sauce should cook for a total of 60 minutes.
  • If you desire a thicker sauce with a more roasted top, bake the sauce longer until you have achieved your desired outcome.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 can 28 oz. crushed tomatoes
  • 4 cloves garlic whole
  • 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper
  • ½ tsp. dried oregano
  • ¼ tsp. dried basil
  • 9×9 baking dish

Instructions
 

  • Pre-heat the oven to 425 degrees

For this roasted pizza sauce, I am using crushed tomatoes. I like to use crushed tomatoes because it makes for a thicker finished sauce. You could also use unseasoned tomato sauce, tomato puree, or whole peeled tomatoes (hand crushed). They will all make for a tasty pizza sauce, however, the main difference with be the thickness and chunkiness of the finished product.
You could also make this sauce on the cooktop in a sauce pan. Just add all of the ingredients, bring to a simmer, and cook for 60 minutes, mixing occasionally. You will be missing the roasted flavor of the tomatoes, however, the sauce prepared this way will also taste great. Just be advised, the sauce will finish thinner when cooked on the stovetop, which might impact your decision when making this for pizza or for a dipping sauce.
